Sustainability: to meet present needs without compromising
the ability of future generations to meet their needs *

My administration's overiding goal has been to assure that the City's fiscal, planning, and environmental policies are built on a philosophy of balance and sustainability. A few examples:

Fiscal:

  • When I assumed office, nearly 30% of the City's ongoing operational fund was dependent upon one-time revenue derived from growth. With the Council's work and support, the budget is now free of dependance upon one-time revenues. In addition, an amount equal to 30% of the general fund has been set aside in operational and emergency reserves to protect City service levels.
  • Our vehicle fleet is now funded and fully managed in order to avoid sudden and unexpected replacement costs.
  • Facility needs, such as the new City Hall, are being completed without asking you for additional property tax increases.

Planning:

  • Unlike many cities who become dependent upon development and growth, our success in weaning the budget off of one-time development revenue has given us the ability to more vigorously defend the values and interests of Snoqualmie residents as we consider future growth.
  • Long planned revitalization projects for Downtown will be underway during the next several months as the Northwest Railway Museum begins work on their new 25,000 sq. ft. train storage and exhibit hall and the City begins reconstruction of sidewalks and streets in the downtown core.
  • Long-time neglect of downtown utility, street and sidewalk infrastructure is slowly, but steadily, being addressed.

Environment:

  • "Going Green" is very popular these days; however, Snoqualmie has been a leader in sustainable environmental practices, policy, conservation, preservation, and design for many years. Our natural environment is second to none. I have continued to build upon past efforts to revitalize, plan and build Snoqualmie using environmentally sustainable practices.
  • Snoqualmie is particularly vulnerable to changes in our environment due to flooding. The newly formed King County Flood Control District will bring over $20 million in projects to the Upper Valley during the next decade to mitigate and eliminate repetative and unsustainable flood losses. I am honored to be a founding member of the KCFCD Advisory Team.
  • The City staff has done an outstanding job responding to emergency snow storm and flooding events during the past three of years. It was at least a "B" effort.
